The Canadian First Nations seem to be OK with "aboriginal" as a generic word, though it's controversial even there, but in the USA,"aboriginal" is definitely not a preferred term. If we are talking USA and Canada together, then "indigenous" would be better, as Canadian tribal people generally are not fond of "Native American".
