I was working there when the mirrors were removed from the columns on the main floor, revealing the Art Deco ornamentation on the old columns. The only real effort that I noticed was the big clock. The Construction Manager for Federated Department Stores made sure that clock was carefully packed up and stored away for to be reinstalled after the renovations. Although I avoid downtown Portland, I found myself there one afternoon and cut through to take a look. Everything was flat, smooth and white, the very definition of bland.
