Two issues with the use of this image, first as a member of the US armed forces a free image will exist of this person, secondary the use does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the page it is used on, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding.   • questionable rationale First, given that this came form the Military Times I could just as well suppose that if an official image existed, they in particular would surely have been able to obtain it; therefore I have to doubt the accuracy of the claim that such an image does exist and is obtainable. Second, in any article about a person it could be claimed that a picutre of them "increases understanding". Mangoe (talk) 15:14, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
As a member of the US forces he will have had his picture taken at some point for a ID pass, that will be a free image (as a work of the US government). The article that the FUR is for, is a list article, however the image is currently not used. LGA talk 22:38, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Keep It depicts what was to be one of the first interracial kisses on modern 1960's television (certainly on a sci-fi TV show) at a time when such scenes were discouraged by US TV broadcasters.   • Comment Did the nominator read the sourced footnotes No. 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 for this kiss in the paragraph where this image is used? Even Nichelle Nichols wrote about the problems getting this scene done in her book, 'Beyond Uhura.' NBC didn't initially want this scene filmed...because it deals indirectly with Racism in America and that was a no no with NBC's executives. This is not a generic image--it has important cultural significance and that was what made the original Star Trek show special and leading edge for its time. So, I don't know why we would want to delete such a significant image in 1960's US television on wikipedia--especially where there are sourced references here. --Leoboudv (talk) 09:12, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

  • The nominator has a point that a screen capture during the actual kiss would be even better than this one (the only one I could find online way back in 2005), so I think the file should be replaced with this one rendering the substantive part of the nomination moot. The nominator does not have a point that "readers can easily visualize" and so forth. That's a rather facile assertion here, one that I doubt will have any support in this discussion. Would this episode have been as controversial at the time and as historically significant if Star Trek just had a narrator describe the action of the kiss happening offscreen, on the theory that the audience could "easily visualize" what it looked like? Anyway, 'nuff said on that non-policy non-rationale.

    As a side note, I uploaded this image eight years ago. I happen to of course still be active here, but I think the typical 2005 editor is not. I was given a talk page notice of this discussion, but no message was left on the hosting article's talk page or in the image's caption.   • Keep or alternatively Replace with actual kiss frame — I tend to agree with postdlf, while the average person will almost certainly have the ability to imagine a male and female of different races in the attitude the image depicts, they may not be able to appreciate the impact that these actors themselves depicting this attitude had.   • Comment The image is now replaced with an actual kiss frame between Kirk and Uhura. Written text cannot convey the ability to imagine the kiss as well as the use of a single frame behind this scene that Nichols discusses in her book, Beyond Uhura. The import of the subject here is Racism in America, not simply a kiss between a white male actor and a black female actress. Nichelle Nichols states how much NBC's executives resisted this scene being filmed since they feared offending their US southern viewers 'sensibilities' on race in the 1960's. Should we ignore Nichols' statements here? I hope not. Because of the broadcast history of this image, it should pass NFCC #8. --Leoboudv (talk) 18:08, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Keep, the visual impact of seeing the Enterprise dwarfed by the Borg cube, introduced in this episode, is integral to an understanding of the episode. The nominator's generic, boilerplate rationale (copied and pasted multiple times in this day's log for several different images) does not come close to rebutting this or discussing at all the informational relationship of this image to the article. postdlf (talk) 15:51, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Marty's "friends... insist that the girl is a homely loser not worth pursuing. The story hinges on whether he'll follow their advice or follow his own instincts to see her again." The photo is not "decorative". It shows the two actors who originated the roles, a key turning point in television history. Clara (Nancy Marchand) is labeled a "dog" by Marty's friends, and Marchand often portrayed unattractive women in her career. The photo certainly increases reader's understanding in that regard. Something was lost when the movie was made and an attractive actress (Betsy Blair) was cast as Clara. So both photos should stay for comparison purposes. Keep This image is significant to the readers' understanding of how blatant propaganda is used in the episode for the advancement of the anti-corporate cause as opposed to actual valid arguments about why corporations are bad. This is certainly a significant theme of the episode which is quite conveniently well illustrated with this particular non-free screenshot. Title cards are usually taken for granted as being of identification value to articles about series, though we usually don't use them for individual episodes because most episodes don't have them. Another issue is that this particular screenshot is arguably geometrically simple to the point of being uncopyrightable, as it's just the text of the title overlaid across window blinds and curtains that have rendered abstractly as just a bunch of straight lines. postdlf (talk) 03:19, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Keep: This is a different image to the one deleted per this discussion. The old image, that was deleted for failing NFCC#8, was a rather generic image of Yar. In it's stead, I proposed an number of images of the tar-like creature, on the basis that it would give the reader an understanding of what the creature looks like - and would help illustrate this section of the article. While I received little feedback on this, I decided to upload this particular shot because of the inclusion of Riker - showing the relative size of the creature to the human characters (per the given FUR: Depicts Riker confronting Armus - a creature formed from an animated pool of a tar-like substance. Khan did not appear in any other ST episode, and the film depiction in Star Trek II looks completely different, both for plot reasons changing the costume and the actor being 15 years older. And Khan is what the episode Space Seed is about.   • Borderline Keep I'm only saying this because it is the only episode where any of the TNG cast wear the movie era costumes. Plus, the costuming was deliberate to ensure that the blood splatter was visible on the red costume by pulling open the front flap. It wouldn't be impossible to describe in text but it would take half a paragraph to do it justice, especially with Picard's reaction to being stabbed.   • Keep, the image of the main cast in 1940s period garb, in a 1940s period set, with the high tech holodeck portal opened behind them (note also the starship's corridor extending in the distance through what looks like a solid building), is really a fabulous one for this episode that immediately encapsulates the plot and setting. Its very difficult to even give a description of this object. A square and cylindrial object with an antenna? How would this make sense--compared to a single photo?   • Delete for inadequate NFUR, which claims it's to identify the episode in The Doomsday Machine (Star Trek: The Original Series) but it is poorly chosen for that purpose (and a much better one is already in the article). The image of a wrecked Federation starship with a breached saucer hull is not one specific to this episode or even otherwise uncommon in the franchise. More important, the screenshot is not from the original and most familiar broadcast version of the episode, but instead from a decades-later remastered version (and the article does not discuss the remaster at all). The article infobox already has the best image, of the Enterprise confronting the gaping maw of an enormous planet killing machine, for identifying the episode and its main subject. postdlf (talk) 20:33, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
