The Mühlhausen organ was completed in 1709, by which time Bach had been succeeded as organist by his cousin Johann Friedrich Bach. However, there is evidence that Bach returned to the town to inaugurate the instrument. It has been suggested that one of his works, a version for three manuals and pedals of 1280: 223: 193: 816:
