setting out of the carriage each day was an event, and a drive round the estate, or a call on one of the other county families, was a ritual. To the passing carriage, every person was expected to doff his cap or curtsy, and failure to do so was met with a severe reprimand. If the footman was not sent at once to bring the offender to the waiting carriage, a sort of private manorial court would deal with the matter during the week.
