They were treated as Blacks by white Americans and found it necessary to establish their own, separate identity as a creole people descended equally from Africans and Europeans. Part of the tale of their immigration is the yearly migrant farm work some of them did, traveling 6,000 miles round-trip from the Islands to the U.S. and back again, participating in the cranberry, blueberry and strawberry harvests in Massachusetts.
