royal family were sent to Russia against their will. And it really was an exile for them. Prince Ioane (John) was deported under a military escort and was not allowed to return to his homeland. The process of deportation was so violent, that Ioane's mother, Maria, killed General Lazarev when the latter was trying to force her out of her bedroom.
