Thanks
  • Thanks for all those who have been adding co-ordinate information to articles as a result of last month's newsletter. The major impact has been on the railway station articles, including disused ones, but other location articles have also been tackled. This effort means that the articles can be accessed directly from external sources such as Google maps and gives them a much higher profile.
  • There has again been a number of suggestions on the ToDo list at Yorkshire Portal and this has been kept up to date.
  • The football and rugby editors have continued keeping abreast of most, if not all, of the top clubs.
  • WikiProkject Yorkshire editors have been busy on vandal patrol at watchlist. Thanks.
  • A big "thank you" to all the editors who help make this WikiProject what it is; no edit goes unnoticed.

New Aims

After discussion at Knowledge (XXG) talk:WikiProject Yorkshire in April 2008.

Specific aims for the project are:-

  • To complete tagging and assessment of all Yorkshire related articles (See below)
  • To recruit more active editors (See Member News above)
  • To bring our top level article Yorkshire up to Featured article status
  • To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
  • To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive
  • To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members

Citations

Citations are a necessity to give credence to the articles that we produce, so that the facts given can be verified. One of the templates that is used for this is {{Cite book}} to give details of books used for creating the articles. There has been some changes to the template that we should be aware of and make changes accordingly when editing articles. The id= field should no longer be used to give the ISBN number for a book instead use the isbn= parameter. The page= and pages= parameters now have the p. or pp. automatically inserted and so we should just put the page number in the fields. Use page= for a single page and pages= for multiple pages. If the insertion of p. or pp. is not required then use nopp=true to suppress this. Note that the number of pages in a book is not specified using these fields and at the moment a new parameter is being discussed to cover this.

Happy New Year

Hope everyone enjoyed the festive season and are not feeling too worse for ware. At the start of a new year we all look back at what has happened in the last year and look forward to the coming year. It is time to take stock of what has happened in the last year well we have managed to get some priority articles selected and to get this newsletter in place to keep members up to date on what is happening. Articles have been tagged and assessed, a watchlist of these has been set up for members to keep track of changes to those articles that the project is interested in. So over all great steps have been made in the last year and thanks to everyone for the efforts put in. Looking forward it is time to make some targets for the coming year. If anyone has any ideas for what we should be doing in the coming year then please share them on the project talk page.

The project is now subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.

  • Monitor
Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
  • Infoboxes
Many of our articles would benefit from the addition of an appropriate infobox.
  • Assessment
Assess and review Assessment of Yorkshire related articles has been revised recently due to new classes being added by the Knowledge (XXG):Version_1.0_Editorial_Team
    The changes are:
    • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
    • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
    • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
  • References
Please remember that the list of stubs needing expansion is always in need of attention. Please take a look and see if you can help. One small edit, such as adding a reference section and reference, to an article each session would make a big difference.
  • Moves
Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

This article seems to be a vandal magnet, with vandals removing information on clubs founded in Yorkshire. I'd place it on your watchlist if you're interested in football in the county. ā€”Preceding unsigned comment added by Roseswhite (talk ā€¢ contribs) 21:13, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Please do not restore content of this banned user. I will fully protect the page if necessary. That said, regardless of the ban on Yorkshirian, there are fundamental, basic editorial issues with the content - no sources, synthesis of material to make Yorkshire appear like it exists beyond 1974 (see WP:PLACE), and WP:BLP issues.
My suggestion? Move the remnants to Football in Sheffield and Football in England. "Football in Yorkshire" is as abitary as "Football in the Pennines". --Jza84 | Ā TalkĀ  23:00, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
It should never have been created. There's no remit to create "Football in County X" pages, especially ones that have been abolished. Who would search for "Football in Yorkshire" anyway? It's a classic Yorkshirian breach of WP:SYNTH to make Yorkshire appear like a country. It's a couple of facts pieced together to give the ellusion of a serious article about an arbitary region. The material could easily be moved to city or country-level articles. --Jza84 | Ā TalkĀ  23:07, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Peanut4, you're not entitled to overturn arbitration decisions - I cannot permit you to restore a banned editor. Knowledge (XXG)'s banning policy states that "Any edits made in defiance of a ban may be reverted to enforce the ban, regardless of the merits of the edits themselves. As the banned user is not authorized to make those edits, there is no need to discuss them prior to reversion.".
Furthermore, Knowledge (XXG)'s verifibility policy states that "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material, not those who remove it". It is more nonsensical to have an unsourced list of facts that have nothing to do with an abolished county. I would much rather protect this page than block yourself for breach of several policies. --Jza84 | Ā TalkĀ  23:35, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, there is no deadline and Knowledge (XXG) is a work in progress. I would've rather not protect the page, but as I say, there are multiple and very serious policies applicable here, and I do not appreciate having a banned user restored over a legitimate one (and an admin at that!), and whilst a warning was in effect, and whilst the content is under discussion.
What would you have me do? - permit Yorkshirian to edit again, with his zealous POV? It just can't happen.
Let's focus on the content issues (inline with policy):
  • Anything past 1974 is breach of WP:PLACE. Ā Done
  • Any unsourced material may be removed at any time. Ā Done
  • Any misappropriation of sources should be fixed. Ā Done (Yorkshirian previously claimed the FA said Yorkshire is the home of football, when infact it say's Sheffield).
  • Any synthesis of material to advance the posision that Yorkshire still exists should go. Ā Not done
  • There are random collections of facts about a man going to Argentina founding football there, again WP:SYNTH (isn't the article called "Football in Yorkshire"?) Ā Not done
I'm mainly concerned about the article. I could create near identical articles called "Football in Northern England" and "Football in the West Riding of Yorkshire" and "Football in the Pennines" and "Football in Yorkshire and Humber" by collecting material and publishing them as encyclopedic, factual topics. See my point?
That the article is nonsensical has never changed. Yorkshirian doesn't contribute effective, neutral material. His blindness to his own synthesis is why he found himself at odds with the rest of the community, hense why he's blocked. This is a WP:FORK to make Yorkshire (a "county" he one declared he wanted to see as an independant state -Ā !?) appear like it still exists, and has somekind of national sporting culture. --Jza84 | Ā TalkĀ  23:55, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Assumption of nationality

I was rather surprised at your reversion of my edit on Paul Tierney. As regards the specific case, despite a surname of Irish origin, he was born in Salford, has played only in England, is not described by any other nationality on the links provided, and there is no suggestion that he has been called up for any other country. He is described on Soccerbase as English, and if Knowledge (XXG) needs to attribute any nationality to him, there seems to be evidence for giving it as anything other than English.

More generally, I am living proof that "place of birth does not govern a person's nationality", and if surname was grounds for assuming nationality, no-one would be reported as being from the Western Hemisphere. But where we habitually record nationality, squad lists on team pages for example (pace the current Sunderland A.F.C. situation), then in the absence of grounds to do otherwise, I have always assumed that place of birth was the grounds on which nationality is attributed. If not, what are we to take? If we cannot assume nationality (and I don't like mine being falsely assumed), then whither flags on articles? Kevin McE (talk) 18:20, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I see you have edited the Tierney article with evidence under which, of course, he should be described as Irish. My query remains, however, in relation to your edit note "place of birth does not govern a person's nationality". I agree that it does not govern it, but is it not Wiki's assumption that it indicates it, in the absence of contradictory evidence? Kevin McE (talk) 18:30, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
No prob: if I thought you were not the usually reliable editor I have seen you to be, I might have had a rather different tone. But can you confirm that PoB gives the grounds for assumed nationality where there is no representative history? Is there any convention about how we treat siblings: is Marc Tierney more Irish than English on the grounds that his brother accepted an invite to play for Ireland U21s? Kevin McE (talk) 18:46, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Peter Wragg

Hi, just to say I don't think the Peter Wragg who managed Halifax Town is the same Peter Wragg who played for York and Bradford. A user left this note on the article's talk page nearly a year ago saying they weren't the same bloke, and I've had a look through some of my York books and no mention is made of him managing Halifax. York City The Complete Record states "Wragg was transferred to Bradford City in 1963 and spent two seasons at Valley Parade. He continued to live in York and for some timed helped to run Haxby FC in the York & District Football League. He died in 2004." Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 20:00, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Heads up. I started a community reassessment. The reason I'm notifying you is because you were the last GA reviewer. Enigma 21:32, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Sunderland A.F.C.

As you may well know, Sunderland A.F.C. failed its FAC recently. After recommendation from Oldelpaso here, I wonder if you could take a look through the article. In particular he said you were good at sorting out the consistency of which football clubs are refered to, e.g. "is/are". Just a request, feel free if you have any spare time. Cheers. Zesh Rehman

Hi there. Believe it or not I was trying to improve and add to the article by adding to and amending the content you added (honestly!). I didn't remove the content you added, just tried to add to it while also making changes. I've no idea how I took out the bit about the Bradford ambassador, so my apologies for that. But everything else was done to improve the article, and had sources. He is the first British Asian to play in the FL and Premier League, which I will get a source for as soon as I can. Also in the templates, I inserted Bradford Telegraph and Argus and so on. Simply reverting my changes though with an edit summary of clean up wasn't really a clean up, it was just reverting my edit back to what it was. The article is improving and will hopefully continue to with your contributions too. I hope that we can work together to improve the article.--ā™¦Tangerinesā™¦Ā·Talk 01:56, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Jimmy Lawlor

Hi there, I've just created the article on Jimmy Lawlor and was wondering if you knew if he was related to Kit Lawlor? - both moved from Drumcondra to Doncaster at the same time...regards, GiantSnowman 12:28, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

They probably are brothers then - Kit's full name is John Christopher...GiantSnowman 12:46, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm willing to say they are definitely brothers then. GiantSnowman 12:48, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

The second suggestion (subcat) sounds the best to me. I think it may be worth looking at the whole category structure around season articles before doing anything though. I was looking at it earlier and found it a bit confusing - it may be fine, I'd just like to map it out for myself so I can get it clear in my head, or suggest improvements if necessary. Anyway, logging off now, will catch up on this later. --Jameboy (talk) 00:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Userbox for GA reviews

The userbox {{User Good Articles reviewed}} has been updated so that it can now link to a page in your user subspace where you keep track of all your GA reviews, if you have such a page. This can be done by adding a | and then the name of your user subpage (or subsection of your regular user page) wherever you have the template called. For example, on my user page I am using

{{User Good Articles reviewed|6|User:Rjanag/GA reviews}}

which displays as

This user has reviewed 6 Good Article nominations on Knowledge (XXG).

There is more information on how to do this at Template:User Good Articles reviewed.

Note: If you are not interested in doing this, you don't have to do anything; the template will still work for you exactly as it does now.

The Alex Smith Conundrum

Hi. I noticed you reverted a recent edit at Alex Smith (footballer born 1947) on the pretext that no-one is likely to end up there looking for a different Alex Smith - a page I did in fact find find myself on when looking for an entirely different Alex Smith who played an international for New Zealand in 1973 and was born around 1947. It is equally unlikely that one may accidentally strike Alex Smith (tight end), Alex Smith (American soccer), Alex Smith (footballer born 1876) Alex Smith (footballer born 1939) Alex Smith (footballer born 1940), Alex Smith (footballer born 1944), Alex Smith (golfer), Alex Smith (ice hockey), Alex Smith (lacrosse), or my personal favourite; Alex Smith (The Simplest Universal Computer Proof contest winner) by accident when looking for an entirely different Alex Smith, yet all still have the same disambiguation you removed from Alex Smith (footballer born 1947). I don't necessarily disagree with your reversion, I just believe in consistency and this was - and again is - the only Alex Smith without a hatnote which was the only reason I added it in the first place. Do these other Alex Smiths somehow qualify under WP:NAMB? Arguably all the football playing ones do. For the sake of consistency all should have the hatnote - or none should. Do you intend to fix all of them? As a slightly side issue of this, I think there are enough Alex Smiths in the world that the real Alex Smith should probably be moved to Alex Smith (Quaterback) and Alex Smith perhaps should be the DAB page. Happy to hear your opinion before I start anything --ClubOranje 03:45, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks and a request

Thanks for signing up at Knowledge (XXG):Peer review/volunteers and for your work doing reviews. It is now just over a year since the last peer review was archived with no repsonse after 14 (or more) days, something we all can be proud of. There is a new Peer review user box to track the backlog (peer reviews at least 4 days old with no substantial response), which can be found here. To include it on your user or talk page, please add {{Knowledge (XXG):Peer review/PRbox}} . Thanks again, and keep up the good work, Ruhrfisch ><>Ā° 03:28, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

  • To recruit more active editors (See Member News)
  • To bring our top level article Yorkshire up to Featured article status
  • To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
  • To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive
  • To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members

Orphan articles

Members may have noticed a new spate of article tagging by bots in the last month. A large number (over 250) of articles belonging to the project have been tagged with the {{Orphan}} template indicating that there are no or few incoming links to the article. It would be helpful if members tried to reduce the number of tagged articles by introducing wikilinks into related articles so that there is a minimum of three links to each of the orphaned articles. Once the links are in place the tag can be removed and the bot should not re-add the tag. The bot is currently only doing articles with no incoming links.

Portal

Those of you with eagle eyes may have spotted the change made to the Yorkshire Portal link in the project template. Rather than the usual jig-saw image it has been changed to the Yorkshire Rose image to give it a more distinctive look and hopefully raise the profile of the portal.

The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis. The latest listing was created on February 25th.
