century, the term "Arab" only referred to those of particular tribal origins in the
Arabian peninsula. The majority of Arabic speaking peoples did not and were not identified as "Arabs" be they Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or Druze. The term's present usage arose in the 19th century when people began to conceive of themselves in the Ottoman Empire as nations and Arabic speakers began conceiving of the Arabic-speaking population on ethno-national lines, including all communities who natively spoke Arabic and followed Arab culture, with racial descent taking a secondary or tertiary role. Its an linguistic cultural category including a whole range of peoples which developed recently. To say there are no Arab Jews because they never saw themselves as such in history is what is disingenuous as it ignores a.) the fact that that would be true for all Arabs, not just Jewish ones (yes I call them Arabs and many sources including the Times of Israel have adopted the term "Arab Jews" so big whoop'; b.) You could say that for other Jewish communities called "Iranian", "German", "English", etc where there were debates whether Jews could be those things; c.) the fact that Arab Jews did distinguish thtemseles from other Jewish communities on account of having an Arabic language and culture (so the idea of Arabic-speaking Jews having a distinctive identity is actually quite old, even if it didn't result in the term "Yahudi Arabi", just as there was no "Al Arabi al Muslimin" back then either and d.) the fact that "Arab Jew" was indeed used to describe the Arabic-speaking Jews in the pre-modern era. Read Orit Bashkin's New Babylonians about Iraqi Jews. It is not a recent or made up term. It is no more a fake category than other categories. The only reason it annoys you is that you're staunchly pro-Israel and Zionists resent any identification with Arabs, viewing them as an enemy. Take your bad faith racism and leave me alone. It is not welcome on this page.
