Dealing with vandalism

...or other obnoxious editing. Please see wp:vandalism. Generally, editors should be warned four times before reporting to WP:AIV. Warning usually are made with wp:templates. i.e. "templating". See WP:WARNING for a list of templates. When especially egregious, one can use {{uw-vand4im}} {{subst:uw-vand4im|*article name*}} I usually reserve this for additions of objectionable images or text - very racist, overt sexual images, etc. Note that there is a clear distinction between vandalism and wp:content disputes, and other wp:disruptive editing. Be sure not to confuse the two! Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 11:05, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi FriyMan. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Knowledge (XXG):Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! -- Samtar 12:00, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Reply to the speedy deletion notice

Thanks for bringing the ugly state of my User page to my attention. It was actually an attempt to paste in an image i had converted to ASCII art. I've put up a temporary user page now. In a few days I'll have one that looks nice. Hope you understand! Arkhaminsanity (talk) 07:50, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Good job! Review WP:UP more. FriyMan 09:14, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello FriyMan, I hope that I'm doing this procedure correctly. My page was flagged for a speedy deletion because the subject was not deemed important enough. I'd included external links to IMDb credits and an official discography listing from AllMusic (amongst others). I'm not certain what else is required to prove legitimacy, relevance, or importance. Please let me know so I can fix it. Thanks! Cartoonhotdog (talk) 08:56, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Automated Edits

Greetings, I'm Exemplo347. I've noticed that you have been making a large number of edits in rapid succession - 24 in 2 minutes - and I'd like to know how? Are you using a bot? I'm curious. Regards Exemplo347 (talk) 09:47, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Good morning, Exemplo347! I made 24 edits in 2 minutes, because I am using Huggle, a semi-automatic tool and one of its options is automatically welcoming users. FriyMan 09:52, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
That may be one of its options, but you should really be using Huggle sparingly. It is not intended to be used to perform that many edits in rapid succession. I've never seen that many edits appear in the New User Edits watchlist in such a short time - are you taking time to verify each of your edits before they are posted? I don't see how you could be. Exemplo347 (talk) 09:55, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
I am taking my time to verify each of my edits. Do not worry, I do not revert without a reason. Since most of the edits I do are welcome messages to IP users, encouraging to create an account, I do not believe that it is a problem. FriyMan 10:28, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Ok, I accept. I might have been wrong here and my theory is that this automatic welcome message could have been a symptom of mixing Twinkle and Huggle. I swear that I did not develop any software doing this automatically. FriyMan 10:34, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Also, how will you explain this? 12:44, 17 January 2017 (diff | hist) . . (+7,163)‎ . . N User talk:Rajender Kashyap ‎ (Welcoming user (HG) (3.1.20)) (current) (Tag: Huggle) - FriyMan 10:48, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

At least one of your Automated welcomes has been posted on the page of a user who has been here for 10 years - User talk:Realblade - and TexTucker has been here since July 2016 so I question the validity of whatever process you are using to select and welcome "new users". I see that after this issue was raised with you, you went on to do the exact same thing again in two more large batches, again so rapidly that it is not humanly possible for you to have individually checked each message to make sure it was appropriate for each user - unless you're about to tell me that you were able to perform these checks in less than 6 seconds, because at 11:44 you posted 10 messages. Exemplo347 (talk) 13:26, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Dear Exemplo347, I myself do not know what is happening. Every time I enter Huggle and browse through edits it keeps on welcoming users every time I see their edits. I have checked huggle settings, there isn't any info about it. However I definetly have proof that this is Huggle. 2:44, 17 January 2017 (diff | hist) . . (+7,163)‎ . . N User talk:Rajender Kashyap ‎ (Welcoming user (HG) (3.1.20)) (current) (Tag: Huggle) Could you please suggest a way to fix this? FriyMan 15:28, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
My immediate solution is that you should disable Huggle and ask for answers at the Helpdesk. You are responsible for the edits Huggle makes, even if you don't intend for them to happen, so the most sensible course of action is to stop using Huggle until you can work out what is going wrong. Regards Exemplo347 (talk) 15:30, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
You are right. I will stop using huggle until there will be a solution to this problem. FriyMan 15:34, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
I think it's best until you know what's happening, it's never a good thing when you don't know what posts you're making and why. Good luck with your future editing! Exemplo347 (talk) 15:41, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
I found an alternative. I am now using STiki, since it is almost identical with Huggle. FriyMan 21:10, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Some advice?

Hello! I've been on Knowledge (XXG) for a while now and I want to take part in anti-vandal activities. I'm really confuses about how to go about this. The CVU page confused me further. I would be greatly appreciative of you would lend me some tips to help make this a better place. Arkhaminsanity (talk) 14:22, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

@Arkhaminsanity:, You might not believe me but I am also learning to teach people. We can start the course at about 11:15 UTC tomorrow. I will guide where to go through my talk page. I will make a new section of my own talk page especially for your education. Is this good? FriyMan 19:18, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Dear FriyMan, many thanks for the big cat earlier  :)
Now- may I ask, how are you learning to teach people? -and do you think this is the time to be doing so? Most of us here- many far longer than me- are still learning ourselves. Remember: Every Teacher Is A Learner. Cheers, O Fortuna! 19:31, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Dear @Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: I am learning by talking to students. I am learning about the best ways to communicate with others and make it fun for students to learn. I believe that it is very important to make learning fun and interesting. FriyMan 19:36, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
FriyMan, I think what Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi is saying is that you are too new and don't have the experience needed to teach people yet. The issue with Huggle and your RfA confirm this. I didn't start teaching people until this month, and I've been on Knowledge (XXG) for 9 months, and I have over 10,000 edits, over 4,000 of them are antivandalism. You need more training yourself before you are able to train people. I'm sure you'll be a fantastic teacher, just wait for a few months. ThePlatypusofDoom (talk) 21:16, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
ThePlatypuofDoom, thanks for wise mens advice. However I might just try my best and see if I can be a good teacher or not. FriyMan 21:21, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Okay, I'll put it bluntly. You are far too new to teach people in the CVUA. Don't do it. Wait for a few months. ThePlatypusofDoom (talk) 21:25, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Fine, maybe than someone else will teach him. If you would like too, maybe you should try. Clearly new users have no authoritah on Knowledge (XXG). FriyMan 21:33, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Very few people have authority on Knowledge (XXG) (the community as a whole does), but users are expected to have a level of skill and experience to instruct new editors, and you are not at that level yet. You'll get there in a few months. ThePlatypusofDoom (talk) 23:24, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Erm, is anyone willing to help me out? i truly want to help, but seems like this isn't going anywhere -Arkhaminsanity (talk) 14:56, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Dear @Arkhaminsanity:, you should probably ask more experinced editors on the WP:CVUA page. Sadly I am not one of them. I myself tried to find a mentor there, but it looks like they are too busy. :-( FriyMan 19:26, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Why did you accept this Edit on Cabinet of Donald Trump

FriyMan https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Cabinet_of_Donald_Trump&diff=762097176&oldid=762037759 It is clearly biased, and has gotten me into trouble. L3X1 Complaints Desk 16:58, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

@L3X1: I assure you, this won't happen again. FriyMan 19:56, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

IS this an ad?

Hiranandani Foundation School, Powai. On reading through its clear that the page has been made by someone from the school. The description of the uniforms gives that away. What action is appropriate and should i investigate further? Arkhaminsanity (talk) 12:18, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

HI @Arkhaminsanity:! I believe that the part about uniform is not an as. However, the part about IB system looks like advertisement a lot. Please take your time to investigate it. Good job by the way. FriyMan 12:50, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

My investigation leads me here ->Lovely Professional University. I don't know if its my editing fatigue, but so much here seems promotional. What is your opinion bout this? (Have a look at the placements section) Arkhaminsanity (talk) 15:38, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello FriyMan. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 15,000 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. -- Samtar 14:51, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

  • I personally would not have granted you this right yet, but the decision rests on admin discretion. Nevertheless, now that you have it, please find time to use it and help clear the backlog rather than continue to concern yourself with admin matters. Thanks. Hi, Cartoonhotdog! Your article is good to go now. If it has sources, it is notable and therefore should not be deleted. To help you, I would like you to play through the The Knowledge (XXG) Adventure. It is a tutorial, that wil help you understand the basics of the Wiki. Cheers, FriyMan 09:01, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Actually, I deleted it. It really isn't notable. The refs are just twitter and facebook and such. The name really doesn't google. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:06, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Anna Frodesiak Well, I guess I was right in the first place... FriyMan 09:10, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
I hope so. :) Cartoonhotdog, you are very welcome here, and I am sorry about the deletion. The thing is, WP:GNG. Please read it and you will understand. Also, you are welcome here provided that you do not promote others or yourself. If you are here to write about someone else, and are being paid to do so, please read WP:PAID. Best wishes to all. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:13, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

It is unfortunate that the references of IMDb and AllMusic had gone noticed. The Twitter ref was a citation for a particular statement and the Facebook ref was listed as an external link for an official page at the bottom. I certainly would not use Knowledge (XXG) as a promotional tool, but rather as a historical and referential outlet. Cartoonhotdog (talk) 09:27, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

British Army GAN

Thank you for your time editing the article. I have spent a number of hours working through the issues you have a believe I have resolved the following:

  • Corrected the dead links. In some cases I updated, in some replaced and in one or two removed as defunct and no longer required.
  • Reformatted the Strength of British Army table to make it easier to read
  • Expanded the History section so that it made more sense and stopped at more natural point
  • Moved some photos to improve the layout
  • Edited down the Structure and Formations. After some thought I simplified this section and removed some detail that was better covered in dedicated articles. The result is a slimmed down and more effective section that still gets the message across

I hope that this addressed your concerns. I will re-nominate the article for GA status and would appreciate it if you would repeat you assessment (as you already are read into the subject). I would also appreciate that if you find anything that would still make it fail that you place that onto the talk page and give me time to fix before failing the whole article. Many Thanks - Stingray Trainer (talk) 23:15, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Good job Stingray Trainer! I am sorry for not notifying you about my concerns before failing the article. I will be happy to review the article again. You've really put a lot of time into this article. I believe, that now this article is perfectly ready to become a GA. Thank you for putting time into this article. Cheers, FriyMan 06:53, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
I have re-nominated the article for GA status. Many thanks. Stingray Trainer (talk) 08:38, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

My talk page

Thanks to your incompetence, a lot of editors have had to take time out to clear up your mess. I know what you are trying to do- but you can't. If the material needs to be removed, an administrator will delete it. Your continual refactoring of my talk page is nothing but rude and offensive. I have read the email you sent sent me; there is nothing in it that makes me think this conversation should not be held here. I assumed your original idea was merely thoughtless; I hope that's all it was. Thank you. — O Fortuna!

I am sorry for the mess, I did not mean to make it. I did not mean to offend you in any way. Cheers, FriyMan 12:16, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Problems with GA review

FriyMan, your review at Talk:Romania/GA6 was reversed today, and the article failed by Ritchie333. Indeed, I don't see how anyone could pass an article with so many "citation needed" templates: that alone is grounds for a quickfail, not a quick pass. I've noticed elsewhere on this page that you seem to not do your best work when dealing with certain Knowledge (XXG) processes: this review, and your other ones, are evidence that you do not understand the GA review process, which also includes the GA criteria and how to apply them.

I would like to suggest that you not do any further reviews at GAN for quite a while; indeed, I'd like to suggest that you gain some experience from the other side: getting your own articles to the point where they meet the criteria and are ready to be nominated, and then see what issues the reviewer brings up and what you need to do to fix them. Best of luck in your other Knowledge (XXG) endeavors. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:51, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello, BlueMoonset. In fact, I was already trying to bring few articles to GA state. But as you probably understand, requests for GA review and Peer review are usually started month after the initial nomination. If you are willing to help me out, could you please give me a few tips and peer review Spitzer Space Telescope? Cheers, FriyMan 20:07, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Alan Abel of the Philadelphia Orchestra

Hello FriyMan. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Alan Abel of the Philadelphia Orchestra, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Article claims importance/significance of the subject. Thank you. SoWhy 06:52, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

All right, I will PROD the page. Single source it has is dead. Cheers, FriyMan 06:56, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Please, be a bit more careful. The single source was only dead because the creator accidentally added it in front of the References' section wikimarkup. Prematurely nominating articles for deletion without considering the alternatives (cf. WP:ATD, WP:FIXTHEPROBLEM) can be considered BITEy and might drive new editors from the project. File:2017 spb metro.jpg listed for discussion

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:2017 spb metro.jpg, has been listed at Knowledge (XXG):Files for discussion. Please see the discussion to see why it has been listed (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry). Feel free to add your opinion on the matter below the nomination. Thank you. –Davey2010 20:01, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:2017 spb metro.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Knowledge (XXG). This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Whpq, I will not even bother contesting... The WP:NFC is too confusing for me. Cheers, FriyMan 20:16, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
There may be other images we can use. Possible sources are Flickr and Panoramio. Take a look and see what you can come up with. Let me know if you find anything and I'll sort the upload. Mjroots (talk) 09:43, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Mjroots, One of my siblings was in Saint Petersburg when the attack happened, I have a photo of soldiers marching down the streets in the city. Would this photo be relevant? Cheers, FriyMan 10:39, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
I think under 'Reactions', perhaps, that would be an excellent addition to the article. — O Fortuna! 11:39, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi. I put the image onto the article. Cheers, FriyMan 12:28, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Фото курсантов в статье 2017 Saint Petersburg Metro bombing

Remember your speedy tagging at Alan Abel (musician)?

Hi there. You might be interested to know that Alan Abel (musician), an article you tagged for A7 speedy deletion, has appeared on yesterday's Main Page as part of Knowledge (XXG):Did you know?. I'm not telling you to berate you or to make you feel bad, I just wanted to take the time to point out that oftentimes articles that are tagged prematurely can turn out to be about notable subjects after a little bit of research (or just using Google News/Books). Rescuing such article attempts is not as easy as "drive-by" taggings for deletion but in the long run it's in the project's best interest to have articles about notable people and not scare off editors who create them less-than-perfectly. It took me a while to arrive at this conclusion myself back in my "younger" days so I thought you might appreciate the heads up. Regards SoWhy 18:39, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Well, I added a few categories to it, SoWhy. But overall, Where is the clinic? I have a strong case of deletionitis! Cheers, FriyMan 05:30, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Deletionitis can be cured by a healthy dose of jumping into own of the maintenance categories and improving some articles. Might I suggest Category:All unreferenced BLPs? Regards SoWhy 06:32, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Sure, I will take a look. Thanks. Cheers, FriyMan 07:31, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

Problems

Changes this week

  • The GuidedTour extension will be enabled on all wikis. This is a tool to explain to new users how to edit.
  • Wiktionary will handle interlanguage links in a new way. The Cognate extension will automatically link pages with the same title between Wiktionaries. For this to work all old interlanguage links have to be removed. You can read more about this.
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 April. It will be on non-Knowledge (XXG) wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 April. It will be on all wikis from 27 April (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 25 April at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

No need to tag it three times for deletion; once is enough. Now they have three messages all saying the same thing which could come across as WP:BITEY. Just an FYI. — O Fortuna 10:06, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi! All of this is due to my stupidity. First, I tagged the article with G11, then I realised, that it was A11. Later, the user deleted the CSD template and I repeated my mistakes again. Sorry. Cheers, FriyMan 10:46, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Problems

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for 20 to 30 minutes on 3 May. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. You can read more about this.

Changes this week

  • There is no new MediaWiki version this week. This is because of the data centre test.

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 2 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • All Wikimedia wikis will have cookie blocks from May 8. This is an extension to the autoblock system so when a user is blocked, the next time they visit the wiki a cookie will be set. This means that even if the user switches accounts and to a new IP address the cookie will block them again.
  • The Publish changes, Show preview and Show changes buttons will look slightly different. This is to fit with the OOUI look. Users can test scripts, gadgets and so on to see if they work with the new interface by adding &ooui=1 to the URL.

Administrator changes

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has clarified that user categories should be emptied upon deletion, but redlinked user categories should not be removed if re-added by the user.
  • Discussions are ongoing regarding proposed changes to the COI policy. Changes so far have included clarification that adding a link on a Knowledge (XXG) forum to a job posting is not a violation of the harassment policy.

Technical news

Miscellaneous

  • Following an RfC, the editing restrictions page is now split into a list of active restrictions and an archive of those that are old or on inactive accounts. Make sure to check both pages if searching for a restriction.

RfA

Hello FriyMan. Barring some miracle, it seems that that RfA is destined for failure, so is it really necessary to add your "gotcha" question there? It is certainly within your rights to ask it, but it doesn't seem to be a very nice thing to do at this time. —DoRD (talk) 12:44, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Well, I am sorry, DoRD. Sadly I do not have telepathic abilities and I did not recognise the fact that this RfA is deemed for failure. I asked it, to clarify if the user had any hopes of contributing to UAA in the future. Once again, sorry. Cheers, FriyMan 13:33, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Even after chosing to be only the second strong oppose in 43 !votes? At least in your edit summary you admit it's not even your own question, I suppose. I think it was- over all- unnecessary. — O Fortuna 13:55, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
  • I have to agree with the comments here, FriyMan. In fact that question is a fairly new trend and one that has been adopted as a workaround to the limitation on questions that was made in the RfA reform of Dec 2015 (multiple part questions masquerading as a single question). For some odd reason, that particular question often appears to be posed by new, or relatively new users. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 20:49, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, Kudpung. I am no expert in RfA, but I thought that this question was a common question during RfA processes. I saw multiple people using it in different RfAs and decided to put it in. Sorry. Cheers, FriyMan 05:48, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
OK, but the best solution is not to ask any questions at RfA at all. The RfA process is branded as the worst thing about the entire Knowledge (XXG) and the question section is one of the root causes of it and what puts good people off from running for adminship. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:02, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
I guess you are right, Kudpung. RfA is obviously a metaphorical D-day for the editors willing to take the job. I guess questions are just making it worse. Cheers, FriyMan 11:02, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Problems

  • Some users have a problem with the watchlist. Some changes in categories make the watchlist a blank page. The developers are working on this. Until this is fixed you can try some things that have helped other editors if you have this problem. You can turn on Hide categorization of pages in your watchlist preferences. You can turn off Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent in your watchlist preferences. You can remove problematic categories from Special:EditWatchlist/raw.
  • There was a problem with the visual editor for several days. You could not save edits that triggered a CAPTCHA. This would for example be when a new user added external links in references. This was fixed on 2 May.

Changes this week

  • When you edit you can switch between the visual editor and the wikitext editor. This works if the wiki you edit has the visual editor. The menu will now say Visual editing and Source editing instead of Switch to visual editing and Switch to code editing. This is because it was confusing when the menu said you could switch to the editor you were already using.
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Knowledge (XXG) wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 9 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • You will be able to get a notification when a page you created is connected to a Wikidata item. This will come to Wikivoyage on 9 May. If there are no problems it will come to most Wikipedias on 30 May. It will come to other projects and English, French and German Knowledge (XXG) later in the summer. It will be opt-in for existing users and opt-out for new users.
  • Markup that looks like code for language variants might need to be fixed. If -{ is used in transclusions or web addresses it has to be escaped appropriately. You can use -<nowiki/>{ for transclusions and %2D{ in web addresses. A transclusion could for example be when you use -{ in a template: {{1x| sad :-{ face }}. This is because of some code fixes to the preprocessor and affects all wikis.

Regarding login.tools.wmflabs.org

You asked on #wikimedia-labs (people were probably idling on the channel at the time):

<FriyMan> Hey. I can't load login.tools.wmflabs.org on chrome. Can someone help?

login.tools.wmflabs.org is a bastion host, not a web host. You're supposed to connect to it via a tool using SSH protocol, not with Chrome using HTTP protocol. Please see the help Section for OpenSSH or PuTTY if you are on Windows. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:13, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Well Zhuyifei1999, as I am not a professional computer scientist, so could you please explain step-by-step for me? By the way, I already have a public SSH key, which I generated through openSSH on mac os x. What do I do next? Cheers, FriyMan 09:25, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
I just saw you asked about getting permission denied. Have you uploaded your key? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:27, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
BTW: Staying on connected to IRC for a bit longer will help, even if you idle, so it's easier to leave a message. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:32, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes, Zhuyifei1999, I managed to upload my SSH key. (Sorry for taking so much time.) Cheers, FriyMan 10:41, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
And does ssh after uploading work? If not, what does $ ssh -vvv login.tools.wmflabs.org show? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:58, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Zhuyife1999, I managed to connect. Thank you. Cheers, FriyMan 05:48, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Problems

  • The mediawiki.util library does not load automatically any more. Your Special:MyPage/common.js may use it. If you have technical problems that started a couple of weeks ago you can try adding mw.loader.using('mediawiki.util').done(function(){ as the first line in the file and }); as a last one. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/18 issue.

Changes this week

  • The RevisionSlider extension will be a default feature on all wikis. RevisionSlider is an easier way to move between changes in the page history. It has been a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Knowledge (XXG) and a beta feature on all wikis. You will be able to turn it off in your preferences.
  • There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

Future changes

Older unreported changes

  • Your Meta user page is shown on all wikis where you don't have a local user page. You can now add the magic word __NOGLOBAL__ to your Meta user page to stop this.

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello FriyMan,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 830 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

Researcher to admins

Hi FriyMan. I noticed that with this edit to the next admin newsletter (to be delivered in a few days), you added an entry about adding a "researcher" permission to the admin toolset. Do you think you could provide a link that clarifies what this means? Viewing deleted pages is already a part of the admin toolset, and at the moment, administrators are unable to grant the "researcher" permission. Mz7 (talk) 06:18, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Second this, as I haven't heard about this anywhere else. – Train2104 (t • c) 14:46, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • You can see new files on Special:NewFiles. You can now pick which dates you want to see files from.
  • When you read Knowledge (XXG) on a mobile device the first paragraph now comes before the infobox.
  • You can now remove navigation elements from your results when you search. This could for example be part of an infobox that is only there to help you find the previous or next article.
  • New users on Wikivoyages and Wikipedias (except French, English and German) now get a notification when a page they created is connected to Wikidata. Other wikis will get it 13 June.

Problems

  • The MediaWiki version from two weeks ago was rolled back. It was fixed late last week. Changes that were planned to go out last week did not happen.

Changes this week

  • Wikimedia wikis can show fewer links to articles in other languages. This is to make it easier to find the languages likely to be useful to the reader or editor. Everyone can still click to see the full list. Logged-in users who use the compact language links will see languages they have in their Babel box on their user page in the first, shorter list. You can turn the compact language list off or on in your preferences.
  • You can choose what dates to look at when you look at a user's contributions.
  • When you click on your watchlist in the mobile view you get a list of all pages in the watchlist instead of the latest changes to them. Logged-in users with at least ten edits will now get the latest changes instead.
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 June. It will be on non-Knowledge (XXG) wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 June. It will be on all wikis from 8 June (calendar).
  • String comparisons in Scribunto modules are now always done case-insensitively by byte order. Before they were sometimes in a case-sensitive US-English collation order. This could break some modules.

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 6 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • The 2006 wikitext editor will be removed the week of 27 June. This is the old toolbar with small square blue buttons. You can see a picture of it. 0.03% of active Wikimedia editors use this old tool. They will not see a toolbar at all.
  • Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron already works on German Knowledge (XXG). It will be on English Knowledge (XXG) later this week so you can test it there too.
  • The Architecture Committee will change and get a new name. You can read and comment on the draft that describes the new committee.

  • When you search on Knowledge (XXG) you can now find pages on other Wikimedia projects that could be relevant. You see them next to the search results.

Changes this week

  • Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron now works on all Wikimedia projects.
  • Administrators can soon search for deleted page titles and find results that are similar to what they searched for. Today the search only finds pages that are exactly the same as what you search for. This is to make it easier to find pages when you don't know the exact title. Administrators on Arabic, Catalan, English, Persian, German, Italian, Polish, and Russian Knowledge (XXG) and on mediawiki.org can test this by adding &fuzzy=1 to the end of the web address when looking at Special:Undelete.

  • There was a problem with maps on Wikimedia wikis that used <mapframe> when you clicked on the link to another map service. Open Street Map or Google Maps are examples of other map services. If you had marked a place on the map the marker would not be in the same place on the other map service. It was in the middle of the map. This has now been fixed.

Changes this week

  • Very old and inactive unpublished translations in the Content Translation database will be removed. This is because of technical maintenance. If you have not worked on a translation after 1 January 2016 you will lose it after 6 July. If you want to keep the unfinished translation you need to open it before 6 July with the Content Translation tool. You can continue working on it later. Translations that were started or have been worked on after 1 January 2016 will not be affected.
  • There is no new Mediawiki version this week.
  • EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. It works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/07 issue.

  • A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Knowledge (XXG), and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
  • Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Knowledge (XXG) – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Knowledge (XXG) has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Knowledge (XXG) wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
