So if you see a Chinese name with two syllables in front, you can be pretty sure it needs to be switched around. Names that are just one syllable-one syllable are a little trickier. I don't have enough exposure to recognize feminine names from masculine (just like we'd know that "Michael" is a male's name), but if you have a Chinese friend, s/he would be able to tell you instantly. Another way is to check some Chinese sources (written in English), like sina.com, but that's not always gospel either because sometimes they will try to conform to the Western (and incorrect) way of naming Chinese people.
