WikiProject Australia is a WikiProject dedicated to improving Knowledge (XXG)'s coverage of topics related to Australia. This page and its subpages contain suggestions on formatting and style of articles, which can be discussed at the project's notice board. To participate, simply add your name to the project members page.

Our goals

  1. To provide guidelines and recommendations for articles that describe all aspects of Australia.
  2. To improve Knowledge (XXG)'s coverage of Australia by creating, expanding, and maintaining such articles in a fair and accurate manner.
  3. To serve as the central point of discussion for issues related to Australia in Knowledge (XXG).

Project scope

The project generally considers any article related to Australia to be a valid topic.

As of 19 September 2024, there are 204,875 articles within the scope of WikiProject Australia, of which 594 are featured and 878 are good articles. This makes up 2.98% of the articles on Knowledge (XXG), 5.38% of all featured articles and lists, and 2.19% of all good articles (see WP:AUSFG). Including non-article pages, such as talk pages, redirects, categories, etc., there are 523,664 pages in the project.

Departments

Assessment

The WikiProject Australia assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of Knowledge (XXG)'s Australian articles.

Classification

An assessment parameter (FA, FL, A, GA, B, C, Start, or Stub) causes the article to be rated and grouped into categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.

While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognising excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.

Collaboration

The Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight seeks to identify particular articles that would benefit from a significant collaborative effort. Every fortnight, a single article is selected as the focus, and the project attempts to improve it, potentially to featured article standards.

Any articles dealing with some aspect of Australia (except for current featured articles and featured article candidates) are eligible, and everyone is invited to nominate articles.

As collaborative efforts have slowed, there is no current Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight.

Requested images

The Requested images department aims to provide a collection of high-quality photographs, maps and images for use in Australia articles. The department gathers existing public domain and free-license maps as well as creating new ones from other materials where no suitable maps can be found. All project members are welcome to request additional maps that may be needed for particular articles from the department.

Outreach

The outreach department acts as the project's central point of coordination for recruiting new members and maintaining the interest of current participants.

Indigenous source material

Please add any indigenous source material (or commons categories) here with a brief description of the content:

  • "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community histories". Queensland Government. Retrieved 15 May 2017. — A good entry point for Indigenous communities in Queensland, all CC-BY licensed and most of the information I have checked appears to include its sources, so a gateway to a broader set of sources
  • "AIATSIS map of Indigenous Australia". Retrieved 15 May 2017. A high-level map showing indigenous language/tribal/nation groups. Please note the limitations mentioned.
  • A compilation of Noongar language resources is at Wikisource:Portal:Western Australia; some are being transcribed there, and added to Wiktionary also. See also Meta:Noongarpedia.
  • George, Karen (2005). "Finding Your Own Way". Nunkuwarrin Yunti of South Australia Inc. Retrieved 4 December 2019. A directory created in South Australia to assist Aboriginal people removed from their families as a result of Australian government policies wishing to "establish connections to their family, community, culture and country."
